Of Time and the City
"At the end of the day, your ideas in a book have less impact than if you had summed them up in two paragraphs on the most widely read blog at the most-read time of the day, so why do you spend two years on it?" -- Emily Gould, the recently-resigned Gawker editor, talking to New York's Vanessa Grigoriadis for a 10.14.07 profile of the then-Gawker crew called "Everybody Sucks." A wise and well written piece...worth 15 minutes of your time.

I haven't the time to read the piece, but in case it smacks of admiration, let's all remember that Emily Gould is disturbingly snarky, somehow smarmy though she's a woman, and also soulless beyong all reasonable human levels. Beware, if you watch her talk too long you'll get a rash:

That video of her with Kimmel is revealing. Just watch her eyes bug at every charge in mock Valley Girl surprise. She's clearly so used to being around other dead souls she can't compute the challenge.
I don't like Kimmel much but he PWNED this idiot creature.
Of course, nobody asked if she would like her private space turned public. But she's the blank face of the new TMZ generation. Yay.

It's OK, guys. So you're just not sophisticated enough to GET Gawker. The references go over your head. I knew guys like you when I went to college in the Midwest. They were from small towns, they majored in Phys Ed, they went to Bible study on the weekends...they were basically rubes. But they were nice guys, like you guys are nice guys. At least you guys aren't total rubes, you guys know about movies.

I'm the last one who should talk about typos at this site, and this is a very understandable key slip.
But still, I've been having fun thinking of what it is to "PWN" someone.

Here's a possibility Ms. Gould would be wise to entertain: What if your ideas are not in the least worth articulating in the first place? In any case, good luck to her in whatever field of endeavor she next opts to toil in.

Always grand to read the dribblings of folks who have done nothing in their life except comment on the lives of others. Nothing like working from the safety of a virtual foxhole to insult and demean people you don't know. As Ecclesiastes said, "One fool can destroy the works of many wise men." It would appear to be a convention of fools over at Gawker.

Because a (good) book will endure for generations while a blog post is but mere static????
...and did you just say "PWNED" christian??? Aren't you the one who rails against the affectedness of texters and iPhone owners?

Okay, I might as well admit it now..."Perfect Tommy" is just another one of my brilliant satirical creations, a clueless mope who enjoys posting about movies with a hopeless, middleclass sensibility. So whenever you disagree with him or he makes a mistake, remember it is all just a very clever injoke that you are not party to. (Note how "Perfect Tommy" ends a sentence with a preposition, something I would never do.)

Please explain how Moby Dick would work as a 2 paragraph spooge on Gawker? Maybe 90 percent of the political books written by TV pundits could work since their extended titles tell the entire story.
