Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

"Blood" sneak tonight

Back in Boston with a gentle reminder: There Will Be Blood is having a midnight sneak in various blue cities across the map. I wonder how it'll play in Redville. I actually have my suspicions. A friend predicted earlier today it won't enjoy good word-of-mouth among the plebes and will taper off once all the ubers have all seen it.

Dallas is pretty hip, but I don't think it officially qualifies as a blue city. Sacramento and San Diego would be pretty borderline, too.

I believe for some of the screenings one had to display a proper thread-count in order to buy a ticket.

you underestimate how many demented people there are here in the redlands who will truly identify with the Day-Lewis character. We like misanthropic people, particularly if they are very weird

Isn't "blue city" redundant? Is there such a thing as a red city?

Somehow I worry about THERE WILL BE BLOOD not making money about as much as I worry about bulls not having tits. I usually fing the whole box office game fairly interesting, but...it's fucking Paul Thomas Anderson. It's Daniel Day Lewis...these guys are Hall of Famers doing work that is going to be remembered forever. It probably won't make any money, but who cares? I know there's a reason they call it show "business" but for true lovers of the cinema, aren't there certain projects and artists that are just operating in a different sphere entirely?

As long as it makes enough money so that Paul Thomas Anderson can continue to make the movies he wants to make, I could give fuckall about the box office.

If There Will Be Blood makes any money at all, thus denoting popularity, Jeff will turn on it in a New York minute.

Saw it last night in front of a packed house (literally in front, we came in late because douchebag friend couldn't find a parking space). Classic film but terrible audience. Way too much tittering and inappropriate laughter. The hip kids might not even know what to do with this film. Daniel Day Lewis is a force of nature, the Oscar is his, give it to him.

The inappropriate laughter doesn't surprise me at all. This is not a film you should see with a capacity crowd of thrill-seeking twentysomethings. If you can stand to wait, you should see it in a theater as desolate as the landscape it takes place in.

Truly wish I could write about this film, but until the "two week warning," or whenever it becomes suitable to discuss all kinds of touchy-sensitive plot details, I'm keeping my mouth shut or moving it over to another forum that has already given the go-ahead for such discussion.

Suffice to say... it's an uphill battle for me even though I truly enjoyed the majority of the film. Just waiting for the film elites to peck me to death any day now...

The film played better in Dallas last night than it did in New York.
