The Third Man (Criterion Blu-ray)
This title in particular has been the subject of a good deal of controversy on Elsewhere (among other sites), message boards, and email lists across the web. No one seems to talk about much aside from the "Grain Issue." Since the grain (or overabundance thereof) is the obvious elephant in the room, I'm going to address it before getting on to the additional content on display here, of which there is much to see and thoroughly enjoy. "Once" in Australia

In a curiously un-bylined article about Once in the Sydney Morning Herald, it is noted that while Spider-Man 3 and Shrek the Third "came, saw and conquered with more than $700 million in global box office cash each, they no longer sit in the top 30 U.S. box-office list. Once, after 13 weeks, has made more than $7 million and sits steadily in the 26th spot.

"In an era of Hollywood studio hype," the anonymous writer also says, "$250 million budgets and comatose plots masked by stuntmen and explosions, it's a rare treat to watch a simple but great film. This quaint rock musical love story is just that."

In an era of increasingly irrelevant critics, they can no longer just say they love a film and why. Nope, seeking a bigger bang,a positive opinion must always be highlighted by some (usually pointless) negative. Once has nothing much to do with either S3 or SM3. Why waste the ink straining to make a comparison. There are big movies and there are small movies. Some big movie bit the dust (Evan Almighty) and some small movies stink.

I'm pleased that Once has had a nice long run and has found fans, but articles like this are just brain dead and should remained unclaimed.

Maybe Rupert Murdoch didn't want to use his byline.

Once puts chemistry first, folds in dysfunction, adds a dash of geekiness and tension, and then smolders into an intoxicating brew. That's what I'm telling myself ahead of seeing Superbad Wednesday in a civilized screening room.

Rupert Murdoch's Daily Telegraph is a competitor to the SMH.

Still, it's silly to compare blockbusters with small films. Some journos really stretch just to fill space.
