The Third Man (Criterion Blu-ray)
This title in particular has been the subject of a good deal of controversy on Elsewhere (among other sites), message boards, and email lists across the web. No one seems to talk about much aside from the "Grain Issue." Since the grain (or overabundance thereof) is the obvious elephant in the room, I'm going to address it before getting on to the additional content on display here, of which there is much to see and thoroughly enjoy. Lionsgate has decided to push out James Mangold's 3:10 to Yuma, the western with Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, on Sept. 7th instead of October 5th. That lets out the Toronto Film Festival (9.6 to 9.15), but does this also mean no-go's for Telluride and Venice?

Variety's Pamela McLintock is saying this will make it the first fall western out of the gate, beating Andrew Dominik's The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Warner Bros., 9.21) and Joel and Ethan Coen's No Country for Old Men (Miramax, 11.9)....although it's not really accurate to call the Coen's film a western. It's more of a mythic end-of-the-world movie set in Texas.

This doesn't really affect Country, as it would have been the third Western either way. I'm interested, though, to see if there is any blinking on the parts of Miramax or Warner. (The viewing public will see Country as a Western whether it is or not, and could be tired of the genre by November.)

I assume Miramax will push Country for Oscar, but should they do a limited December release with a wide one in February? That will put a little more time between it and its counterparts.

No one is going to see COUNTRY as a Western. They're going to see it as a Coen Brothers movie. It's very obviously being sold as a thriller based on the trailer. It's no more a Western than BLOOD SIMPLE. Besides, 3:10 and JESSE JAMES will almost certainly bomb, so it'll be fine. Also, if they push it back, I will kill you.

I don't think 3:10 will "certainly bomb." It might even be a decent-sized hit. It's a total crowd pleaser and Lionsgate could not be more excited about it -- even if it is a western.

For a trailer that truly blows, look no further than the new one for FRED CLAUS. The teaser was mildly amusing (in light BAD SANTA sort of way) but the trailer has definitely taken all the saccharine notes from ELF and strained them through the production grinder from Opie's HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS. Giamatti does everything but an actual spit-take in the thing.
