Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

I've just found out "Becket" will be playing in SF (at the Castro Theater, appropriately) for one day only, Feb 7th. I'll be first in line.

The one that always comes back to me this time of year in Chicago is (paraphrasing from memory) "Once, when I was with you, Thomas, I embraced the cold. Now I am weak and fear it." Or something like that, I guess I'll see when the DVD finally comes out, or when Jeffrey has posted the entire movie as MPs, whichever comes first... :)

Can you imagine such diversity, not to mention, QUALITY, in 1964, when "Becket" was nominated for 12 Oscars, including, of course, Best Picture, along with the 13 nominations recveived by "Mary Poppins", the 12 garnered by "My Fair Lady" (which won Best Picture in the Age of the Movie Musical, fairly or unfairly, over both "Becket" and Kubrick's timeless "Dr. Strangelove"). Then you have "Zorba the Greek" (ahhh...I can just see Anthony Quinn dancing now) rounding out the 5 Best Picture nominees. It makes one weep for the "good old days" compared to the relative over-marketed pablum today. I can't wait to see "Becket" again after all these years, when it comes to Boston, and see how it holds up.
