The lowdown on Apple's iPhone, which ships in June. The 4GB iPhone will go out the door in the U.S. as a Cingular exclusive for $499 on a two-year contract, 8GB for $599. I'm kinda"sold" on this thing, frankly. The more I read about it, the damper I get.

I find it absolutely gorgeous, but I'll pass on the whole Apple monopoly thing. Open the OS to other hardware, Apple, and I'll be more inclined to buy some of your products.
Till then, I'll pass.

It looks cool, but 8 GB of memory is awful for $599 - $599 with a 2/year service contract.
I just hope the next iPod looks as slick. I have no problem keeping both on my person. Actually, I don't even want my iPod to be my phone.

I would make love to the "Jesus Phone" if I could.
The only negatives seem to be 1) Cingular 2) 600 bucks only gets me 8 gig.
Tons of pictures, BTW:

The iPhone doesn't rely on a Mac to use. This is such a tired arguement since Apple is a hardware company first and uses the software as a selling point.

At first I read this the traditional way, as in 'I'm not excited'. Then I read the full context and all I can say is EWWWWWWW.

Apple is a software AND hardware company. You may choose to ignore that fact, but it doesn't make it any less valid. Maybe you can provide some data to back up how they are NOT both?

Because you're making an issue out of it. Apple is a business and they make money off of their hardware whereas not so much off their software. Steve Jobs didn't even mention any software in today's keynote.
Like I said, to use the iPhone you don't have to buy a Mac so your comment is pretty much null and void concerning the topic. Besides you can run Windows on the latest Macs. Hell I know people who have bought Macs recently only to run Windows on them just because the hardware is so sexy.

My argument is not null and void, as it pertains to my preferences within the market place. This is not for you to determine for me. A truly uninspired comment, Mathew.
“Apple is a business and they make money off of their hardware whereas not so much off their software. Steve Jobs didn't even mention any software in today's keynote."
Without the OS, Apple hardware would have died long ago. People bought (and still buy) Macs because of the OS and hardware interoperability. When they were near death, they saved themselves by purchasing Next and brought Jobs back as a consultant:
http://www.applematters.com/index.php/section/history/february_4_1997_whos_next
If the OS was no big deal, why not market to the already huge Microsoft audience with their hardware? Because then they would have been just another pc.
The move to Intel was a move to get the best available low voltage designs for their OS and hardware without sacrificing power:
http://www.computerworld.com/printthis/2005/0,4814,104665,00.html
If Apple is not also a software company, then they shouldn’t charge for the OS under any circumstances. In addition, they shouldn’t charge for their pro version of Quicktime. More examples of software created by Apple:

Many more examples from www.apple.com
The phone is nothing without the Apple software driven functionality, and it will certainly work with itunes but not likely any other music purchasing interface. Itunes has been licensed (for profit) to Roku (without DRM functionality at this point).
Making an argument that Apple is not a software company as well as a hardware company is rationalization.

Sorry Mitch, either buy a Mac or get over it. You're wasting your time as Apple will never release a standard version of OS X for PC's.

I just bought a Cingular 8525. Full, slide-out keyboard, which I like, and it's 3G compatible. I even got it for half the price. And, yet, it pales in comparison to the iPhone of my dreams... Finally!
It's a long wait 'til June.

Mitch, so it only works with Apple's free software iTunes, which you can use to buy songs from Apple-- or to keep and organize ANY OTHER FRICKIN' SONG ON THE PLANET ON A CD OR IN MP3 FORM. Yeah, that's sure evil.
*Okay, so it has to be an MP3 or an AAC. If you absolutely must have your songs in Ogg Vorbis or something, why is it Apple's obligation to support your willful embrace of obscure technology?

I'm sorry, Mitch, but I don't understand - what is your objection to Apple using its software to sell its hardware?
People who like OSX buy Apple computers instead of PCs
People who like Xbox Live buy a 360 instead of a PS3 or Wii
People who like Tivo buy their DVR instead of the competition.
So what?

I made a comment about preference, MathewM responded and took the position that Apple is a hardware company first and uses software as selling point, and I stated rather emphatically the point that MathewM's position is untenable, which it is. Apple is both a hardware company and a software company. That is a summary of how this thread became so involved.
From a marketplace standpoint I have absolutely no objection to Apple tightly binding their hardware/OS. Totally up to them, and I support their decision to do so. I'm a staunch capitalist (within reason, of course) through and through.
At the same time, I'm not interested in buying (anymore...I own a G5) Apple products until they offer the OS on generic hardware. Sure, iMacs are sexy, but that doesn’t mean I want to pay more for less hardware than I get with a DIY desktop (within which, of course, I may install a myriad of OSs). In addition, I chose to extend this out to all Apple products as my own little island of hardware-locked-OS protest. Thus, no iPhone, no iPod, and no income for Apple from me. In essence, whether because I don’t like Apple commercials, or because I read iWoz and decided that I hate Steve Jobs, or just because I don't like the look of apples and thus hate the Apple logo, the reason I choose not to buy Apple products is a personal preference. This is not so hard to understand.
