The Third Man (Criterion Blu-ray)
This title in particular has been the subject of a good deal of controversy on Elsewhere (among other sites), message boards, and email lists across the web. No one seems to talk about much aside from the "Grain Issue." Since the grain (or overabundance thereof) is the obvious elephant in the room, I'm going to address it before getting on to the additional content on display here, of which there is much to see and thoroughly enjoy. Stacy's Lament

Regrets and spiritual support extended to Orange County Weekly freelance film critic Greg Stacy, who was recently whacked after 11 years of regularly covering film for that paper. He was told a few days before Christmas that he's "being let go as part of the Village Voice chain's plan to stop using freelancers altogether," etc. He wrote a column bitching about this situation that Media Bistro Fishbowl L.A. posted yesterday.

a lot of movie advertising dollars are leaving the print media so what's the point of having a movie reviewer if they aren't bringing in the big bucks? Seems like Carmike has stopped posting their times in the local papers and just run small inch ad asking you to call the theaters for times or check the website.

The great movie reviewer purge is happening. We'll see more inch count of think pieces about how movie critics somehow matter.
