Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Beyonce/Hudson trade ads

The presumption of this Dreamgirls piece by N.Y. Post writer Mandy Stadtmiller is that Paramount/DreamWorks is making a stronger push for a Best Actress nomination for Beyonce Knowles than they are for Jennifer Hudson in the Best Supporting Actress category, despite everyone saying that Hudson has a stronger role and delivers a lot more oomph and pizazz. Stadtmiller called me and I gave her a couple of quotes, but I don't know how many ads have been taken out or whether there's any kind of preferential treatment going on either way. At this stage "For Your Consideration" trade ads are half about vague hunches and half about political courtesy.

You know that diva bitch and her stage parents have been throwing FITS ever since the Hudson-is-a-lock called.

Once the decision was made to run Hudson in the supporting category - which, whether technically right or not, is definitely the shrewdest move - then the only viable option for Knowles was a (doomed) hail mary campaign to try and sneak her into the best actress competion to keep her placated for feeling like a piece of the scenery in the final cut of the film.

If they tried to put both actresses in for supporting, who knows how many votes Knowles' presence would have split off of Hudson (definitely not half, but possibly enough to be a spoiler - if she were even to make it on the list at all). And it would have been a lot more embarassing for Beyoncé to fail to make the final five in that category (when Hudson WILL) than to be "edged out" of one of the most competitive best actress races in years. A race so competitive that it probably would have been merely a pyrric victory to get Hudson into that group as a "just-happy-to-be-here" runner-up instead of a real candidate to win the secondary trophy.

Beyoncé should be doing everything in her power right now to support her co-star (and shut papa Knowles up) and not be made to look like a whining brat who's so unsatiated by the overwhelming success and fame she's already earned that she has to taint Hudson's first big shot at the limelight.

Everyone's dying for bitchfest to grow out of this picture - Beyonce v. Hudson, Holliday v. Hudson, Beyonce v. Diana, Diana v. Wilson. Right now most of it looks press driven.

Beyonce must have known when she signed on that Effie was the better part and whoever played her was going to get the glory. Since she co-wrote one of the pictures new songs it's damned likely it will be nominated, she'll sing it on the Oscar show, and go home of an Oscar of her own. So she can relax.

Check out the trades: Dreamamount is pushing Hudson for Supporting, Knowles for Lead, Foxx for Lead, and Murphy for Supporting. The Foxx & Knowles categories MUST be contractual. Both of them barely registered in this movie, which is as much of an ensemble piece as Little Miss Sunshine. In other words, EVERYONE should be Supporting, if anything at all.

Agreed on all the above comments.

I know you're being polite to a reporter who gave you some good play in her story, Jeffrey (and I don't blame you), but since I don't have to be polite: this is typical N.Y. Post claptrap. The reporter is obviously unsophisticated about how these things work. The Beyonce push is obviously contractually motivated, as Ernie says above. By pushing Hudson into the Supporting race, they're *helping*, not hurting her; there's an excellent chance she'll end the night with a little gold man and Beyonce will end up with nothing (assuming B can't win Best Song, which, as Atwell says above, she stands a good chance of taking so what does the Knowles clan have to complain about?).

You come off well, Jeffrey, but the article is classic Post dish, oversimplifying the story for the sake of salaciousness and ultimately misleading the reader.

Beyonce couldn't play the part of Effie because of body type issues. Also, the Foxx part won a leading actor Tony, so he would seem to be properly categorized (though whether or not he has a prayer is an open question).

Ugh, I just don't care for Beyonce Knowles. Her voice is okay - she seems more like a product than a human being - and the omnipresence of her pushy stage parents don't help.

Beyonce singing is ok. Her speaking voice in annoying. She did not have the talent to play Effie. The excuse about weight won't work. If she could lose 20lbs to get the part she is playing in Dreamgirls than she could certainly gain weight for a great part like Effie.

Finally saw it and Beyonce isn't that great (or even really the lead) until the very end of the movie, where she has a defining moment. This really is Hudson's movie and when she leaves the screen after that climactic song everyone is talking about, the movie hits a bit of a lull... when she returns, it picks up again. All of the advance hype for this movie was well warranted... this is a slam dunk for Condon and DreamWorks, and I expect it to get the most nominations of any other movie.
